I've been thinking about building a RAID5 file server for a while now. I bought an Adaptec 2610SA RAID card a while back when I first had the idea and now I've finally got some spare cash to finish the idea.

I was initally thinking about just using a standard PCI motherboard but since the card is PCI-X, I wouldn't mind the increased performance if I can find a motherboard cheap enough.

At the moment, I can only find ones on Ebay for 100+ I'm guessing this is because they are not generally found on home motherboards.

Since a PCIe RAID5 card is out of the question cost wise, is it possible to find a PCI-X motherboard anywhere cheap?

Look for Supermicro, most of their older boards supports PCI-X, there aint that many around as its a dead technology when compare to PCI-e, I had the same idea last year, after searching high and low, I gave up and just by luck I managed to get a PCI-e 8 port RAID6 card on ebay for 80 bucks.

I guess I don't have the same luck as you :(

Had a look on ebay but the Supermicro boards are still fairly expensive. I guess I'll just take the performance dip and use an old PCI board. I guess I can put the saved cash into an extra 1TB drive to make the array a little bigger and just wait for PCI-e Hardware RAID cards to drop in price. Gonna have to wait a long time though.

Thanks for the help
