Sounds like it is something to do with the speed of the RAM bought and what the default is on the mobo bios - any idea of these details, or have a look in the manual's bios section to see if it mentions changing RAM speed.

had a look in manual and can't see no settings for ram

managed to find something that changed cass latency, so changed it to 5 to match the ram, it made no difference, tried the 2 sticks together and seperate but no joy, i also tried them alongside the ram that was in there 1 at a time. pc started ok but the extra ram was not acknowledged on the computer

there's a few options here.

1. maybe it isn't a bios issue, possibly a jumper on the mobo to change ram speed - anything in the manual for that?

2. the mobo will take x amount of RAM, and you have are trying to add (either on it's own or with the old RAM included) more than the system can handle..

what are the specs (speed and size) of the original and new RAM??

the motherboard can handle 2gig ram, the sticks dont have to be paired, just going through manual now. this is the new stick

nothing in manual bout ram setting on mtherboard, only jumper there was clear cmosTry a Clear CMOS with the PSU unplugged from AC. This will erase all BIOS settings so you'll need to write them down before clearing the CMOS.

eek, bit drastic but will give it a go

Yep, I know but we need to do it anyway just in case. :)

Hi mate....

This would seem to be a common failing with this board, also known as a FOXCONN p4m800p7mb.....

I think you might cure the problem by using DDR instead of DDR2.....

I think you might cure the problem by using DDR instead of DDR2.....

I read that on some search find on google but I can't see how it could be true as the Pin configurations are so different the RAM physically wouldn't fit.

I can't remember mobo's that accepted both DDR and DDRII but it was a while ago.

Good point..... :hdspin:

I've read conflicting reports that the memory should be as low as 266mhz and some read as 400mhz.....

Not much help I know.....

Had simular problems with an e systems PC before with memory also, and the only memory it would recognise was PC2-4200 or below

geobon - did you manage to fix m8

Yes eventualy got it working with 2GB using PC2-3200, although it did accept PC2-4200 but only had one stick to try.

Try sticking one of the new sticks of ram in slot 2 and leaving slot 1 empty and see if it boots ok, this was the only way we could get any memory over 533mhz recognised.

i tried both sticks solo in both slots

Well if its anything like the one we had problems with then its only compatible with PC2-3200 400mhz & PC2-4200 533mhz memory sticks.

If its any help the PC2-4200 memory that woked in it was Kingston KVR533D2N4/1G as it was from the lads PC so have just looked to check.

cheerz for that.

would still be worth while redoing theclear bios thing, seems a bit strange if i'm only putting same data back in lol.

also geobon, was it the same mother board as mine

Clearing the bios is deffo worth a try and certainly wont do any harm, and yes it was one of them foxcon boards.

BIOS is just like human brain, it could go nuts sometimes. The settings are there but it doesn't go by them. So before spending the money to get new parts, many times a reset of the BIOS is all we need. If Clear CMOS doesn't help, try new RAM like geobon said.

telling the friend to take his PC to a shop and not you perhaps:cheers:

and that's meant in the best way btw - the amount of time I spend on my dad's pc, sometimes the shop seems like a far better option.

hope you get it sorted anyway!

If after clearing the CMOS and resetting the BIOS but you still have the same problem, try adding about 0.05 to 0.1V to the DRAM voltage.
