Confused Xbox newbie...help

I can't decide whether to buy a modchip with a flashed bios already inside or flash my bios myself.
1) If I flash my bios myself, will I be able to install and run evo-X dashboard?
2)By flashing my bios myself, will I be able to play imports/backups and homebrew apps?
3)Once I install a modchip (I am looking at the Executor 2.3 lite+) do I have to do anything else (other than install evo-X) to get it running smoothly?

The bios is what makes the thing work, whether you flash the onboard bios or get a flashed chip. They act the same because of the bios, only advantage of a chip is the ability to turn them off and play xbox live.
