View Full Version : wifi o2 broadband prob
basically not sure if there's any settings i need to change.
the main pc flies is hardwired to the wireless box 2, however the laptop is as slow as anything when surfing.
takes an age opening web pages.
got a good wifi connection of 4 out of 5 bars, but takes about 10-20 seconds for the page to load (even though the page title changes immediately).
so any settings i can do?
it's a vista machine (main is XP)
2gb ram
1.88 (or something like that) Dual core

Brother had same prob on Sky, they suggested he tried changing channel numbers in the modem settings, worked for him, might be worth a try?
nah tried that, still the same.
think it must be a setting on the lappy, cos it was much quicker on my old BT wireless connection.
d/l is fine, it's just the web page loading times
EDIT - in fact just did a speed test 1 at a time, with the lappy sitting next to the router.
it's aboout 4-5mbs difference!! :confused:
anyone else able to help at all?
just can't get my head round this and it's starting to do my head in! lol

Try resetting the Vista TCP/IP :
- Type cmd in the Start Search box;
- Press <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<Enter> (3 keys at once) to open an elevated admin Command Prompt box;
- Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt box then press <Enter>;
- Type netsh int ip reset in the Command Prompt box then press <Enter>;
- Reboot.
trying that Van but when i get to the command prompt, and press the 3 keys at once it does nothing. :confused:
so i ran the command anyway and it obviously said needs to be elevated.
is there another way to open the elevated admin command prompt?
not sure if it makes a difference but my user id, does have admin rights

Here (http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/158/1/How-to-open-an-elevated-Command-Prompt-in-Windows-Vista.html), bud.
Edit: When you type cmd in the search box, do not press <Enter>. Instead, press <Crtl>-<Shift>-<Enter> to open the elevated command prompt shell.
cheers will let you know, just gotta wait 5 mins for the page to open! lol
right done all that and still the same, seems to be incredibly slow on our sister site, but on here it's a bit quicker.
but still don't think it's right :confused:
thanks for the help m8y:merry:
nah in fact it may well be quicker now, is there any kind of ping test or something that may be useful?

Are you running IE or FireFox? Are you running Vista with or without SP1 (http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows-vista/windows-vista-sp1.html)? Might need to do a reset for the router (with all power and Internet cables disconnected then turn off the router and the PC/laptop for about 2 mins).
Edit: Please also tell the make/model of the wireless adapter.

nah in fact it may well be quicker now, is there any kind of ping test or something that may be useful?Yeah, you need to do a reboot after resetting the TCP/IP and Winsock. You can run a search on Google to find the closest speedtest sites.

Is yours the RTL8178B or RTL8187B (http://www.realtek.com.tw/products/productsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=1&Level=6&Conn=5&ProdID=143)? Drivers (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=1&Level=6&Conn=5&ProdID=143&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true) for RTL8187B.
Is your connection getting faster now after the TCP/IP reset?
ohh well Van Nugent, thanks for trying to help an idiot out, but it's still the same.
i've bit the bullet now & using Firefox :(
it's running at the speed it should be now, so must be a conflict in IE somewhere.
