X-Cuter compatible with hard drive?

I have an older x-box with I believe an X-Cuter 1.0 chip in it. (not sure)

Can I put a new hard drive in this, or does it have to be one of the newer chips in it?

I've been using my xbox regularly, but I have been outta scene for a while so any input would help.
