Pioneer 107 or the 8x NEC one

I would take the Pioneer over the NEC anyday. Pioneer has more media flexibility and they seem to be better for updating thier firmware. If you are planning on using Ritek DVD-R media, then the Pioneer is definitely the better choice. ;)

Whats the difference between a 107 and a A07?

One comes in a box and has software.

Sony dru 530a is also good, but more pricey.

Yup, Also if I remember right the 530 Requires a firmware upgrade to burn DVD-R at 8x and it doesn't have the firmware upgrade option like the Pioneer does which allows you to burn 4x DVD-R at 8x. ;) As mentioned by Mr.Snatcher the Pioneer 107 is the OEM (bare drive) version and the A07 is the Retail (drive, with software, cables and screws). So it's the exact same drive, it's just that one is a bare drive and the other comes with extras. IMHO the OEM 107 is the best deal. The software that comes pre-packaged with the A07 isn't the greatest and virtually all software you would need is either downloadable freeware or a program that you would have to purchase seperately anyways. That leaves only the IDE cables and screws. You should have a spare slot in your PC for it or you can pick up an IDE cable for dirt cheap, the same can be said for the screws.

It would be easier if we knew what kind of computer you have. There is no best.

Although I don't know anything about DVD Burners, I just ordered a Pioneer DVR-107D because I heard great things about it. Anyway, you can buy it for $119 here:

Here is the one I bought (Black version):

I just prefer the Pioneers for the firmware options/number of people who have them (easy to find support should you need it).

Go for the NEC 2500a mate, cheap...5 Stars on eBuyer.

I got it about 2 weeks ago, not a single coaster yet, from around 20 discs.

Last time I checked Benq was only making + format writers though. Yeah, the Pioneer is about 15 pounds more than the NEC.

As far as software goes IMO the best software is free. :)

yeah, most of the software that comes with the retail versions isn't the greatest. It does varry from writer to writer though. ;)

He asked for the best not the cheapest, go with the pioneer m8 you wont be dissapointed, as stated all thru this thread there is cheaper alternatives out there but IMO the pioneer is best for compatibility and for support.

yep BenQ reaks of Philips. especially pushing their double layer recorder now.
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/Specific.asp?ArticleHeadline=BenQ+DW830A+DL+record er&Series=0
still the plus gang trying to slag pioneer dual layer recorder i see from page one, i thought we had got past the + and - debate, obviously not.
imho,
any genuine 8x minus and 8x plus burner like the pioneer AO7XL
http://www.rlsupplies.co.uk/products/product.asp?id=916
would fit the bill.

I have got a Cendyne 105(repackaged Pioneer) it is still running, burn daily on the thing. Only problem it has is reading discs sometimes with a little scratches. But that is what the extra DVDROM i have is for! Pioneer makes quality. So go with that.
