My DVD-Rom has been messing up a lot lately, so I am going to get another one. Does anyone know if the following Sony DVD-Rom is anygood?

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with Windows XP. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! :bigthump:

After you add in shipping costs it isn't worth it (well over $30). I like Sony for some things but not for DVD-ROM drives. Most people here will recommend the Lite-On. I seriously suggest you take a look at www.newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/) You can find pretty much any DVD-ROM drive for under $40 shipped there. Samsung is my personal recommendation. A decent ripper and they are probably the quietest drives out there. Lite-Ons are very quick rippers but can be quite noisy. Definitely don't use ebay for DVD-ROM drives. You just won't save enough to make it worth it. I will take a new Lite-On, Pioneer, Samsung over that Sony any day.

Exactly, keep off of ebay, newegg has some good ones for the same price and free shipping. Samsung 616 or 816 as JR suggested is a good choice

Yep, and isn't this a co-op thread?

The Sony DDU1612S is in fact a rebadged LiteOn 166S, I've used many of them in new system builds when the Litey has been out of stock. Only thing is it has Sony firmware which is cr@p at reading certain discs but there is a hacked firmware out there which I always use on these drives. http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=59148

As above though go for a genuine LiteOn if you can though.

Moving this to Consumers forum for you.......

Yup, you can get a brand new Lite-On from Newegg for less than that Sony AND unlike buying it from ebay you will actually hold the original reciept which makes it easier for warranty/exchange purposes should you need it. Oh yeah, and newegg has one of the highest customer satisfaction rates of anybody out there. ;) Here are a couple of Lite-Ons for cheap.

Both of those are cheaper than the Sony after you factor in shipping costs.

$14 for shipping that ebay item? Thats way too much.

Yeah but that crap is standard over there now. You can find some good deals but you REALLY have to dig for them. IMHO the only thing that it is good for now is rarity items.

Yup, that is the 166 model which is probably the most highly recommended Lite-On model out there. ;) It should work just fine with your Dell.
