basically they bought this "brand new" from a small independent shop, however the shop to register VISTA entered a password on it.

my bro-in-law didn't know there was the UAC thing and tried to do a system restore meaning it now has reverted back to the shop password.

is there a way around this to save them going back to the shop tomorrow or not?

will not let them get into it at all not even in safe mode.

Something bothered me when I read your post. Did you get a new laptop from the shop or was it a reboxed or already used by the shop to show the model to the customers? The buyer (and not the shop) must be the one who activated Windows when he/she 1st turned it on. There had to be some reason the shop needed to do the activation. The simple thing to do is to contact the shop for the password. Vista admin password is dam n hard to crack, especially if it also contains special characters. Just give the shop a call.

If it didn't have a password before the System Restore, can he not Restore again back to the date he messed things up.

Having said that .... Van makes a very good point .... was this in fact new or a used machine

to be honest i'm not sure.

the type of place at first i thought was like a place where peeps take nicked goods (and wouldn't have asked for help with that)

i did ask them if it was that kinda place but they said no a proper independent shop, may have been a trade in or something. but was fully boxed etc.
