Hi all

What free (i do mean legitimately free) software do you recommend for new laptop with just Vista loaded. I'm looking for DVD burning software and other useful stuff.

Thanks in advance.

A few to kick off with :

Open Office (http://openoffice.3-suite.com/index.asp?aff=105&camp=gg_op_uk&se=google) has to be a good free alternative to M$ Office
AVG (http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition) Antivirus or AVAST (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) Antivirus (you decide)

This website is my first port of call to freeware/open source software:

http://www.techsupportalert.com/

e.g. for a CD/DVD burning software, I followed the recommended option of CDBurnerXP and it's spot on.

ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com/) is all I use to burn anything and everything from 360 to data to building ISOs. I use VLC Media Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) to play my movies, music, etc.

Thanks for all the info guys, its much appreciated. I thought i'd replied to this ages ago, but obviously i'm just an ignorant sod.

http://www.techsupportalert.com/ This is a great link.

I also got AVG, and open office which looks just like office.

Download.com was also a great starting point.

So thanks again guys.

Class site, but what about adware and malware with free softwares, does this site check all these for that first before they recommends software?

I haven't had such issues with their recommendations and I am sure they would consider things such as this and whether or not it hogs system resources as part of their recommendation.
