I've received my modem and i'm told BT will change my line to adsl next week.
Do i need to wait until then to install and connect the modem or could i do it now so its ready to use ?
Also does it matter if the modem is connected to the telephone master socket or an extention socket ?
Any easy to understand help with Bittorrent would also be much appreciated.
thanks

You can install the modem now if you want, it won't make any difference.
The modem can also be plugged into any socket at all, but bear in mind that you need a microfilter on all connections that have telephone devices connected.
BitTorrent is simple. You find a site with torrent links and click on one, the program then goes off and finds all the peers sharing that file and begins to download. Do a search on here as I recall their being a post a short while ago about peoples favourite client.

Do it now if you like, won't cause a problem.
Does not matter if connected via an extention either so long as you have a filter on it.
BitTorrent .... Well the beasic principle is that someone initially "seeds" a file and others then "leech" or d/l from it, then once they have part of the file everyone downloads small pieces from you whilst you d/l from them and the original seed and so on.
Here's a good FAQ about what BitTorrent is and how to use it:- http://wiki.theory.org/index.php/BitTorrentFAQ

many thanks for the help memphis and lazza.
I think i'm going to install the modem tomorrow because i don't want to find i've got problems installing it once broadband is available.
I've got 2 micro-filters that came with the modem but i've got 3 phone sockets in the house. Will it be ok to just disconnect one of the phones because we don't really use it anyway.
Thanks for the link Lazza,i'd like to get to understand and know how to use it now so i'm not wasting time once my broadband is connected.I've joined with pipex and i read you get free newsgroups but this is something else i'll have to learn about.
I've never bothered d/loading much with having normal dial up so i'm a complete novice to bit torrent and newsgroups etc.
thanks again

Yeah you can just disconnect the other phone. You only need a filter on sockets that have something plugged into them.
(You would be surprised the number of people who forget things like their digibox for Sky or a fax machine etc.)

My line was activated about 4 days earlier than BT said, so you may be surprised and it might work straight away!
Such a lovely sight seeing '512 connected' pop up in the corner of windowz
