Have a look in the drives Properties/Security/Advanced/Owner

You should be able to select/add your account from there.

Yep, like Phil said. The problem is caused by either:

1) You're not the admin or the user that has the right to modify files; or

2) The hard drive in question was formatted using an earlier version of Windows; or

3) The hard drive was locked or at least some of the folders/files on it were locked by another system.

For case #1, please follow Phil's advice. For case #2 and case #3, the best way is to backup all files on that HDD to another drive and reformat it in Vista.

hi guys, sorted it now, apparently its a commen problem with vista 64 bit version, even though i was the admin the owner was system so every time i tried to alter it it would say write protected , my friend who's a it manager suggested that i right click on explorer and open as admin then in the tree select the drive and alter the owner that way but what i did was delete the drive and the controllers from the device manager tree and rebooted and all was ok then it was back to admin as the owner , really weird problem though, because the day before it was ok to drag and drop then i updated windows but didnt check etc as its not the thing you check for till it would'nt allow me to paste or send any thing to the drive .

cheers
