my recycle bin has vanished

i can still delete stuff but cannot empty bin because it is no longer on my desktop

Are you on XP or Vista?

Edit: If you're running XP, rightclick on desktop, select Properties then the tab "Desktop" then the button "Customize Desktop". Select the icon Recycle Bin (full) then click on the button "Restore Default". Select the icon Recycle Bin (empty) then click on the button "Restore Default". Finally click OK to accept the changes.

Right Click on Desktop/Personalise/Change Desktop Items
Tick Recycle Bin & Click Apply

This seems to happen in Vista, when folk right click the Recycle Bin icon and hit "Delete" instead of "Empty Recycle Bin"
