Playing movies on 360 ?

Hi guys, i dont know if this is possible or not, i have searched the net.
Can somebody let me know if it is possible to play any video format by putting it onto a usb flash drive, without having xbox live, reason i ask is that i have put avi film onto drive, the drive is seen ok and it shows the avi file on it.

When i click on it i get message something like "cant play this type of file" and that i need to d/load additional codecs.

Is there anyway of installing these codecs without having to d/load through xbox live.

You can stream it. Otherwise I'm not sure if you can update without XBL. You can check the M$ website and see if they still offer updates that you can burn to disc.

Use windows media center 11 to stream divx from your computer, works fine for me.

You can also stream netflix to your xbox if you have GLive & a $9 nexflix subscription.
