look through the hole in the bottom right of the front of the drive
if you see yellow wires, it's a liteon and needs swapping out for a mod
if you see white wires, it's a benq and can be flashed
unlikely to be either of these but:
red/black wires means it's a samsung
a plastic dip instead of a hole means it's a hitachi
cheers

i have just got a 360 back from microsoft for rrod.
i have a white wire at the front of the hole as above, and can see a red wire further in. is it a benq?
they said they've replaced the unit, new serial number. does that mean the whole units been replaced or just the drive?
thanks
Open it up and tell us ;)

White wire means BenQ, they've probably fitted a new motherboard as well. Last one I got back from MS was a brand new board and BenQ drive.
You can double check using this:

The problem arising if there is Red+White it could be a 'new' Liteon and would have the same tray.

managed to get a look myself instead of a relayed message from my lad, but only thru the hole, not opened up.
the tray is benq, liteon. the white wire is benq. further in (maybe my torch is too bright lol) there are 3 more wires 1 red, 2 white which i think would be mobo wires.

Sounds like a BenQ then, it can be flashed.
