Unexpected shutdown

My brothers XP laptop has started this unexpected shutdown, he says a box appears after about 20-30 mins and it says something like this shutdown was initiated by RPC or IRC and to save all work, then it counts down from 60 secs and shuts down.
I assume this is a virus or worm so whats the best thing to get rid of this?
