broadband speed varies dramatically

My broadband connection has been very very slow and basically been a apain. I did a speed test earlier it said i was gettin 6mb, same test ten mins later says i am gettin 384kps!on the download just done again it comes back 3850kps and ideas?? Its complete pain up the arse! wat could cause be?

I think a few details would help...

ADSL or cable
Wired or wireless
Downloading anything
Uploading anything - do you have a p2p client running for example
Anti-virus - set to do a scheduled update
cpu running high
only just started or being happening a while

wireless network standard tiscali router
only have vista virus checker

first thing to do would be try it with a wire to the router instead of wireless
