just installed a new graphic card but keep getting a message to update display driver the drive i have for my current card is up to date a hd4870 my previsous card was an 8600gt i think the reason it is coming up is because i never uninstalled the drivers correctly because i am not sure how to al tho i did remove the nvidia display drivers from the add and remove program not sure how to sort this problem any1 help thanks in advance

Open Device Manager then remove (uninstall) the video adapter. If it asks whether you also want to remove the driver, select Yes or OK. Restart the system and install the correct driver for the video card.

yeah i thought thats wat i needed to do but when i looked i only have the option to uninstall the new graphinc card and not the 8600gt so should i still go ahead with this

nope i never had any luck i still get the message update display drivers could it be because i am using xp

Make sure you've the latest video driver (http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp).

yeah a had the latest drivers but still no luck i know the problem was because of the exsiting drivers but they just wouldn't uninstall aftr i uninstalled the hd 4870 drivers i got what looked like a thermal image on my screen so i got piss with all the messing around and formated all is well and running sweet thanks for taking the time to help yet again VAN NUGENT

After you uninstalled the video driver, Windows will assign the default VGA video driver to the video card so that's the reason for the low res desktop :). We would need to reinstall the correct driver then reset the desktop to higher resolution.

have you onboard video as well?
perhaps your bios is trying to run that aswell
