Overheating?

I know from personal experience that the Asus ATi (Still not fixed that typo huh ;)) Radeon 9800XT get's very hot, possibly hotter than other 9800XT's. The non-standard cooling system isn't all that great IMHO.

Maybe try leaving the side off the case?

Oh, are you running the Asus SmartDoctor thingy? I know for fact that the program causes no end of problems however they appear to have fixed most of them in the latest release (Available from Asus). If your not running it, then obviously it's not the cause, however it would be worth getting the latest one just to check the cards temperature.

That's a start anyway.

is there anyway of cooling down the card by adding an heatsink and fan on the other side of the card?i have a small fan and heatsing which is 6400rpm.
i am not running smartdoctor m8.

Well, try downloading it anyways, will give us an idea of how hot your card is getting.

Any extra cooling will help, so if you can mount the fan somewhere so it will blow onto the back of the card then great. Forget the heatsink as the slab of copper on the back of the Radeon will do the job nicely.

If we can tie it down to a cooling issue, there are plenty of solutions you can look at. It would be pointless looking at extra cooling if that's not where the problem is, so try some of my suggestions to see if it is temperature related.

You don't need to set it to do anything to be honest m8, unless you want it to control your cooling of the card.

Your idle temperature is fine. It's not likely to be jumping that much higher under full load either, so that pretty much rules out temperature problems.

You could leave SmartDoctor running and go for a wee gaming session, then look at the temperature when you come out.

And just for those wondering, GPU's are designed to run far hotter than your CPU, so an idle of 45 degrees is actually very low, especially for a 9800XT.

also would upgrading the cpu to amd athlon 3400xp+ make a big difference or will it be a waste of money?
one other thing.whats the fastest ram that this board will take?

Well, under load, my identical card hits about 70-75 degrees C. Admittedly 'slightly' overclocked.

I know for a fact that they can go higher without too much worry.

I really don't think that it's temperature related anymore, especially as your saying that it's only CoD that's the problem.
