help with wireless and network

I use the laptop mainly and connect to the internet via wireless, I have another pc very close that i also use but that is not wireless, I plugged a network cable into the port on the laptop and on the pc but it disconnects the laptop from the wireless network. Is it possible to set it up like this or do i need a wireless usb thingy for the desktop pc ?
