I have been watching these discs quite closely as they are just starting to become reasonably priced. I know Taiyo Yudens are top notch for quality and I am considering switching from Ritek/Ridata to these when the price drops a little bit more. I thought I remember someone posting that these did not have the AZO dye on them but I was wondering if they were still highly compatible and worth the extra cost over Ritek. Anyone?

Nope, there is no AZO content in TY discs. TY were the inventors of the cyanine dye, a development of which is still used on DVDR today. AZO is a Mitsubishi product. Third parties like Ritek etc use hybrid formulations with small amounts of the AZO product included.

Fact is, though, that it isn't the amount of organic vs AZO material in the dye that dictates quality (despite what a lot of people say), it's the quality of the materials used, and TY's non-AZO formulation is still one of the very best.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up. I can get a 50 pack of them (4x) for $75 USD+shipping right now (roughly $1.50 a disc) which isn't bad for Taiyo Yuden and it looks like the price is going to start dropping a little more frequently now. 100 packs from the same site are $1.38 a disc+shipping.

Sounds like a deal to me, that's a similar price to the MCC Verbs which are also very decent discs.

I must admit that as soon as either MCC or TY comes down to a reasonable price I'll be buying them. I'm already using the MCC Verbs for important stuff just now (easy to tell the difference, the MCC/Mitsubishi dye discs are in Jewel cases, the CMC in spindles).

That was me but it was regarding the Taiyo CD-Rs. :) In case you're curious though, they burn perfectly in my Samsung CD burner. I can't tell you how they work with my Pio 105 though as the Pio 105 won't burn any CDs properly atm. :/

Wish I could trust that but as I've learned what is true in the UK isn't necessarily true in the US (and vice-versa). The only brand name item that I purchase now is for CD-R. I purchase the Fujifilm CD-Rs that are Made In Japan as they are gauranteed to use the Taiyo Yuden dye on them. These were recommended to me by several other people who have confirmed this. I have had a couple of batches of these now and they both had the light blue Taiyo Yuden dye and are actually better priced than the regular Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs. Anyways, The Verbatims of which you speak run between $1.50-$2.00 a disc in my area. I can't quite justify spending that much per disc when Riteks do such a great job for only 80 cents a disc. I really wish they would put the MCC Verbs in spindles, so that they could be had for cheaper. I really could care less about cases when it is so much cheaper and more efficient to store them in a nice case logic folder. ;)
