Apart from the icon changing, does the program actually stop working?
Sorry to cling on to this thread but I too have had same prob with media player 9. I have to reinstall then restart. It always comes up with the end program window titled "media sink event". I hope this is helpful in finding a resoloution

You might have some spyware. I have had instances where "winpup" or some other spyware was corrupting MediaPlayer (wmplayer.exe) and I had to run Adaware 6.0 (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/), and The Cleaner (http://www.moosoft.com/) to get rid of it, and then reinstall a clean MediaPlayer from the Microsoft website to get it fixed.
I suggest running one or more of these programs to see if you have something there that shouldn't be and possibly clean it up to see if that helps.

I found this in a google search about Media Player 9 spyware.
Read the "End User License Agreement (EULA)". Check this out:

such a security update, we will use reasonable efforts to post
notices on a web site explaining the update."
Do you really want to give microshit that option?? I don't!!!
