Having problems with my monitor switching on from standby at boot up. System is still booting up but with no display. Ocassionally display appears on boot up, but freezes after a few minutes operation. Not sure if this is related to my monitor dying or problems with my graphics card. Any Ideas?

Im running Windows XP Pro

AMD ATHLON XP 2600+
512mb ddr ram
geforce fx 5200

had no problems with system for 6 months, until recently after a two week holiday.

It could be a video card problem or a monitor problem. It's possible that the refresh rate is set too high for your monitor to handle, but then again it's been running fine for 6 months.
If you can boot into the Safe Mode, remove the display card form Device Manager and reboot so that it can be redetected and reinstalled. Set a lower refresh rate.
