I've ordered a new pc (see below) which has Vista installed on it, i may eventually put XP on instead but i'm going to give vista a go first.

I've got alot of software that i'm not sure will work on vista.
In particular i want to use TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6.
I know vista will be ok with the latest version but i'd prefer to use the old version because i read somewhere that newer versions re-encode the files.

AMD X2 Processor 4400 (2.3GHz)
2GB (2x1024MB) 667Mhz DDR2
320GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive
Windows Vista Home Premium

I'm pretty sure it will, almost all of my video software did without problems but I can't remember 100% whether I installed this too as I sometimes use it.

If you're running Vista x86, there is a very good chance that it will work with no problems. If you're running Vista x64, well...

guess i'll just have to give it a try when i get my new pc.
my daughter has got vista on her laptop and i don't really like it so i probably put XP on and have dual boot if i can do it.

Most authoring apps (if not all) give you the option of not to re-encode the MP2 compliant segments. These include Nero Vision (http://www.nero.com), Ulead (http://www.ulead.com/products/runme.htm) VideoStudio & MovieFactory, Pinnacle Studio (http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Video/Studio+Family/), Roxio Easy Media Creator (http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/creator/suite/overview.html?ClickID=cepvzvl47fazwspplsl4skzfnvws knppfkix). They work great for both XP and Vista and support 64-bit as well.

i've actually used all of those you've listed accept roxio but i prefer to stick with tmpgenc.
hopefully my old version of it will work on vista and if not maybe the newer versions of tmpgenc will give me the option not to re-encode as you said.

many thanks

i'm trying the latest version of TMPGEnc DVD Author and i can't find the option to do this.
It looks like its going to render and shrink the files

If the source DVD is bigger than the target, the files must be re-encoded.

If the source DVD is bigger than the target, the files must be re-encoded.

the source is only 4.2gb but it wants to re-encode all the files ans shrink it down to about 3.7gb, i can't see any need for this or any option to stop it from doing this.
i think i'll stick with the old 1.6 version :)

If the original DVD is 4.2GB, why do you want to redo the disc?

If the original DVD is 4.2GB, why do you want to redo the disc?
because its a dvd that someone has compiled without any menu or chapter points.
i wanted to make a simple menu with selectable chapters but the program insists on shrinking all the 21 mpeg2 files that i've added.

Please try to enable the smart encoding.

it says smart encoding for some of the files and full encoding for some of the others.
i really think they've ruined this program, i've installed my old version and it seems to be working ok on vista so i'm going to stick with that.
thanks
