which budget recorder

Try a Panasonic e50 at Target USA for $224.

Agreed.

The better quality recorders, regardless of format (LG, Philips, Panasonic etc) are of a much higher quality than the Taiwanese stuff.

The Panasonic is a good, solid, reliable choice.

Of the two you mention, I'd say the Yamada as Musteks have been totally unreliable for me.
