How good are these dvdrs,I got s a Nec burner looking for decent media besides ritek. Does anyone know good media to use for this burner that's under a dollar a disc.

Optodisc is so-so, as are many other brands under $1 a disc. Honestly you should've spent the extra $20-$30 and got a Pioneer burner. Well worth it for Riteks. ;)

OptoDiscs are officially Grade A media m8 ... the thermal-printable ones I use are anyway. I can't speak for how they work with NEC burners, but with my Pio burner, they work flawlessly. As an example, the Optos don't put any strain whatsoever on my v10 PS2, whereas many other types of media do. They also always pass the verification after write, so I know the burns are good. Personally, I'd rate OptoDiscs equal to Riteks.

Yep .... they are not the best, but are probably level with Riteks.

see here : www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm (http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm)

Not sure how a NEC Dive will handle them though .... my advice would be to try get a sample pack, b4 committing yourself to too many ;)

Funny how views change... I was flamed only a couple of months ago for suggesting Optodiscs as a realistic alternative to Ritek :)

I am advised that the new 8x Optodiscs (both +R and -R) are to be priced the same as G04s, and have had some very promising results so far. One to look out for.

Well, A friend has had problems trying to burn them on his pioneer, so he gave them to me since they work in my sony, the dye looks exactly like princo's. So how there rated equal with ritek in beyond me.

What difference does the look of a dye make?

TY looks like CMC. What does that tell you? Not a lot, really.

strange about the Pio. :/ I have heard about mixed results with the blue & white topped Optos which is why I always specify that I use the thermal-prints. Princos make my PS2 scream btw. heh

jase1 (http://66.197.142.137/forums/member.php?u=492) - sorry I missed it, I would have been right alongside you getting flamed. lol I've been using the Optos ever since I got my burner last year. vbmenu_register("postmenu_12933", true);

Ah that is what I wanted to know. I knew that certain types of Optodiscs were supposed to be much more compatible than the others. I just had so many reports of mixed results that I figured they were like other cheap media brands.

I tried these with reasonable results although they tend to freeze/stutter nearer the end of the disc on 2 of my 3 standalones (Panasonic/Samsung) and the price difference between these and ritek make me stick with ritek, I think the best budget disc under taiyo yuden/verbs/ritek etc are what jase1 pointed out to me last week, goalover G04, i got a tub out of curiousity and the results have been good, they also work great on the panasonic DMR E50 recorder.

Never seen those goalovers here in the US. Anyways my guess is that tc wants the optodiscs because he has an NEC burner.

Yup, if Postech/Goallover can keep the yield up when Postech move more of their lines over to DVDR production in the next few months they could well be serious competition to Ritek etc.

At the moment the production is too small to make any serious dent in the larger manufacturers' pockets.

They were a decent player with CDR a few years ago (they had a very similar VCD compatibility with early DVD players as the Princos and Vivastar discs but were far higher quality and tended to last a lot longer) but got into trouble with Philips over royalty payments (which Taiwanese company hasn't :insane: ) and being a smaller company it did knock them back a lot.

Glad to see you rate these discs geobon :)

The thing about Optodisc is that they are one of only two Taiwanese companies deemed good enough by Panasonic to produce DVD-RAM discs, and the Optodisc RAMs appear to be every bit as good as the expensive Japanese media, which is praise indeed because RAM production is complicated and needs very exacting quality control.

I dont know what CMC is. The difference to me is light purple to dark purple. Funny thing is the optodiscs have a slight problem in my thomsom xbox but the riteks are fine, since the opto's are light purple, the laser is having a hard time picking up on the reflectivity. Maybe its the material used, princo probably uses a crappier organic material than what opto uses but use the same dye?

atm I get them from Rima, but NewEgg is even better if the price is right. ;) Better yet, if one of my distributers can get me a good deal on them, I'll start selling them myself. :D

btw, I have used the 1x and 4x thermal-prints thus far (shiny silver-topped). Inkjet-printable are supposed to be reliable as well. As I mentioned above, some have had spotty results with the blue/white-topped. Maybe Opto has those made at another factory.
