Virtual memory message on shutdown - Win XP

Sorry this is a bit short on detail, but a mate has approached me with details of a problem on his comp. He is running Win XP Home edition on a reatively modern comp (bought this year he says) with 256mb RAM. When he shuts it down he h=gets an error message relating to low virtual memory.

As i said sorry about lack of info but can someone offer some pointers please. I've asked him to get back to me with his full spec.
