Hi,
Just bought a new Dell desktop. Comes with Vista. Installed XP but the wireless wont work fro love nor money. Tried drivers from the Dell website but most of them dont run as they aint XP compatible. The ones that do run dont find the appropriate hardware and so dont really run either.
Its a Dell Inspiron 530 and the wireless card is an Asus WL-138G_V2. Downloaded the drivers form the Asus website and it said it couldn't find the hardware and to re-run when card installed (something about the wireless icon appearing in the system tray once card installed).
Would prefer to use XP over Vista but if the wireless wont work I'm stuck with Vista
Anyone got any thoughts on this one?
Thanks in advance,
Yosih

I noticed on the DELL website that they do offer the Inspiron 530 with XP option. Why didn't you choose it? :p
Did you download & try the Asus WL-138G_V2 driver version 3.100.64.0 (http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/WL-100g-03/Driverv3100640.zip)?

Dell seem to be quite odd about their OS options. When I checked before xmas there was an XP option. Then right after xmas the XP option seemed to disappear and wasn't available when I bought it and now its back! Also before xmas when I checked it added £100 to the price of the comp. I get a free copy from work so seemed a little nuts to fork out £100 for something I already have.
I'll try the drivers you have linked to and update you all later. I think I may have tried the V1 drivers. D'oh
Thanks VN

Yep, your right, most places charge you extra money to upgrade to XP from Vista. Bill Gates must be behind all of this!!!

Perhaps he feels that as it's a superior OS, he is justified in charging more Van ;)

Just want to add some more... People usually do not appreciate what they're having until it's taken away from them. This is a good example. :)

TBH I never wanted Vista in the first place. I'm happy in XP land. Just never thought it would be so much hassle getting Vista off and XP on.
Vista is back on the machine and the wireless working well so I know the hardwares ok. Now to try dual booting to get XP going and try the drivers VN found.
Another question I have about Vista is whats the security like? If I am using Bit Torrent for instance, is the Vista gonna try telling Big Bill that I'm a bad boy? Is there extra security in there thats gonna be the bane of my life if I use Vista?

No ... you should be ok .... you might like to try VistaforExperts, that Lazza posted yesterday though : http://www.compuhelpforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21560
It will quickly turn off all the "Fisher Price" stuff & bloatware crap.
Also if you're going to dual boot with XP, grab VistaBootPro (http://www.vistabootpro.org/) ... it will make your life easier. Guide here. (http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/about88231.html?sid=ce24a781c299c47553082cda776536 46)

Mr Enfield,
Thanks for the pointers. Might be worth giving this Vista nonscence a go after all.
Downloaded VistaBootPro after reading a guide last night. Getting XP dual boot is on the list of things to do tonight. Looks easy enough but knowing windows is bound to do something stupid at some point.

Using Peer Guardian 2. Update it weekly but might change that to daily. Any other IP Blockers you can recommend VN?

ProtoWall is a very good 1 but I do not think it'll work with Vista, ATM. I'll check on this.
I use both PG2 and ProtoWall at the same time on the box that I use for p2p only.
