Good day folkz

Today's problem :bawling:

When running dvdshrink and backing up the files to the Hard drive it starts off ok at great speed with a time of 13 mins left then by the time it gets to 6 mins everything has slowed to a crawl and even though it says 6 mins left its probably 10

I looked at the CPU usage and it was 100% is this possibly a cache problem ? or is there another problem lurking in the back ground somewhere.

Many thanks in advance

Do you have any earlier versions of Shrink installed on your PC?

I deleted the older versions when updated to 3 . 1 . 7

Will that make a difference with an older version of DvD shrink ?

If they are on your machine they can make a difference (programs conflict with one another). You could try removing the current version and getting a version that is slightly older.

Jesterrace ty for the advice, I have now deleted 3.1.7 and gone back to 3.1.6.

I will try running tonight when I get back from work..

Check your DMA settings for your Hard Drives in System / Device Manager they should be set to DMA 4 or 5

If your running XP they can default to the slow PIO Mode if there are more than 6 subsequent Hard Drive errors.

Had this problem when I started burning, CPU usage was at 100% when burning now @ 3-4%

:insane:

Try Dvd Decrypter instead. Make sure you aren't doing any other tasks. Also XP1800 isn't all that fast, so things take longer.

ok.. 1st things 1st :) on both settings one is on DMA 5 and the other on DMA2

I have DvD Decrypter downloaded but is there much difference between that and Shrink being a newbie on pcs.

And on shrink 3.1.6 still Cpu @ 100% :(

OK, go to Edit > Preferences > Preferences tab > Make sure that "Run analysis and backup in low priority mode" is ticked. Was this ticked in fact?

If not does this now sort it for you?

go to control panel--->administrator tools--> click to view the logfile
in the logfile you can view what happen to the system and application. If you found the problem in there, just click on the link to microsoft database, and they'll show you how to fix the problem.

How have you got your drives configured ? and are you ripping/shrinking from your DVD-ROM or Burner ?

Just to verify .... how long is your rip/shrink taking and on what size of movie ?

Right.. I think I have Dvd rom as Master and the DVD burner as slave and ripping/shrinking from the DvD rom.

And the shrink is taking about 30/45 mins and the movie Last one was Matrix rev

That is the kind of speed to expect IMO .... nothing too much to worry about there.
Some DVD-ROM drives are faster than others & DVD Burners are generally slower still.

I would consider switching your DVD Burner to the Master drive, although this wont really affect your ripping/shrinking speed.

Just backed up a film..using shrink.

Analyse 2 mins Normal CPU
Back up 30 mins 100% CPU
burn 13 Normal CPU

On a 1h 51 min film

Its just that I have never noticed the 100% CPU usage before :S

Yup .... those speeds look respectable.

The compression engine in most backup programs is always very memory intensive.

It probably is ...... you never noticed it ;)

Ok thank you everybody that has had an input on this..it looks like I need a bigger CPU at the end of the day.
