I've just been given a nice new PC at work running XP Pro but need some help with the setup. A standard ghost image has been used and a lot of the system has been locked down. I'm an administrator on the machine and have permission to alter the setup but I'm not sure where to look to change the following:-

Logon screen - I have the standard win2k screen but want the xp 'welcome' screen putting back
Contol panel - again I have the win2k classic style but I want the xp style
Think its it for now but I'm sure to find more over the next few days. I tried to fix the logon screen by changing a registry key but when I reboot the registry key has been changed back, could there be a logon profile which causes this?

Any help is appreciated.

If you right click anywhere in the task bar you can go to properties and change the appearance of the start menu and its contents.

Off the top of my head I don't know about the login screen, perhaps it is under users, or maybe under desktop appearance, doesn't seem too important so someone else can look for it :)

Hi,

I've tried what you suggest about the start menu but that doesn't change the way the control panel is displayed. For example if I chose user accounts I should get a screen with 'pick a task', various icons etc but I actually get an old style win2k dialog box with just the users and groups listed.

I think If I could get to the XP style control panel I could fix logon screen under the option 'change the way users log on or off' inside user accounts.

The Windows Welcome screen only works if you are not logging into a domain. Since the system is at a office you probable are. Otherwise, go into the control panel --> User Accounts --> "Change the way users Log on or off".

For the control-panel style...first go to folder options, general tab, and make sure "Show common tasks in folders" is selected. Then go into the control panel and there should be a link in the upper right hand corner that says "Switch to Category view" or "Switch to Classic View". Again, none of this will do any good if you are on a domain.

That explains things, I am on a domain.

Thanks anyway.
