My Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop has gone nuts up before my replacement has arrived! Basically the screen blanks out randomly and currently we think it is the backlight.

It is well out of warrenty and I don't exactly like the idea of sending it off to Dell, so does anybody know if computer shops would be able to (or even willing!) to fix it then and there? Or is there a very detailed set of instructions somewhere for doing it yourself?

Thanks gang.

Are you sure its the backlight? when it blanks out can you see anything at all, even a very slight dark picture? at a guess i'd say theres probably a bigger chance its the inverter thats needing replaced, if so any shop will fix it and rip you off in the process, service manuals are available free online and inverters can be had from as little as £10 via eBay

Hi mate, was purely a guess about the backlight. Sometimes when the lightfrom my room is shining on the screen I can indeed see a small amount of what should be on the screen such as MSN etc.

Also like I say sometimes it work for a small amount of time before going black. However when it does the screen is generally slightly red.
