Hi there. I probably should put this in the PS3 section, but seeing as it's also a Network problem I think I might get a better response here first.

My mate has a Playstation 3

Here's the problem, he can't get online via his wireless network.

He has the same set up as me (Linksys WRT54G) but unfortunatley were as my network is wep encrypted he's is wap.

Because I'm used to wep I can't really advise him what to do next.

Anyone here got a similar set up that can point us in the right direction.

Oh yes, better point this out. He typed 192.168.1.1 into the web browser and managed to get onto the Linksys set up page. He then selected wireless then wireless security and thats where he has stalled because he can't find a key/password.

Thanks in advance

he needs to goto wireless then wireless security once there copy the password and the key numbers and channel number then wap and then copy it to the ps3 network setup,
this should work as i had wap before i changed mine over for security reasons and works on 2 psp's we have but i don't have a ps3.

Well if he can get into the Router's configuration settings, via 192.168.1.1, under Wireless/Wireless Security he should see :

Security Mode :
WPA Algorithms :
WPA Shared Key :
Group Key Renewal :

If he cant then something is wrong with the Router or the firmware is corrupted. He could try holding in the reset button for 30 secs, whilst powered up or grab the latest Firmware from Linksys and see if this helps.

He may have to re-enter his settings afterwards .... i.e. reconfigure the Router.

Thanks polarstar but the problem is he went into wireless then wireless security but there was no password....it was blank (well thats what he told me)

if it helps further he says his set up is WPA2 Pre shared key only (whatever that means)

Yes Phil thats what he's getting but he's telling me that WPA Shared Key is blank. I was under the impression that this should display some characters spelling out the key/password that he needs for the PS3 to log onto the network.

Hmmmm. never used the Shared Key Option, I use WPA Personal with TKIP.

Anyway this is from Linksys Help :

WPA Pre-Shared Key: There are two encryption options for WPA Pre-Shared Key, TKIP and AES. TKIP stands for Temporal Key Integrity Protocol. TKIP utilizes a stronger encrytption method and incorporates Message Integrity Code (MIC) to provide protection against hackers. AES stands for Advanced Encryption System, which utilizes a symmetric 128-Bit block data encryption.

To use WPA Pre-Shared Key, enter a password in the WPA Shared Key field between 8 and 63 characters long. You may also enter a Group Key Renewal Interval time between 0 and 99,999 seconds.

It might just be better if he starts again and enters a new password, or switch to WPA, without the Shared Key.

Hi, sorry me again.

He's had to format his laptop today and in doing so he can't access his network with that either.

So, to reset the router back to it's original settings, does he have to switch off the router then power it up whilst holding the orange light/button?

And I'm assumming from there he can follow this.......

http://register.wireless.utoronto.ca/?page=linksys

to re-connect to his network.

Thanks in advance
