network problems ?

This will be an easy question for anyone who knows about networking

My mate has a wireless router which can connect to his laptop wirelessly

However when I put the ethernet cable in I have a steady orange light on the network card which is on board

I have tried different ethernet cables and routers.

Could the intel 100 part of the mobo be knackered ?

Would I be able to install a cheap network pci card instead ?
