looking at getting an external hard drive to play hd films on my 360 - so will any external hard drive do the job?

From what I gather yes... but if your looking to stream media i.e WMV-HD files greater than 4Gb then it needs to be formatted with the apple format HFS+ I think... FAT or NTFS will not wirk with these fiile types :)

NTFS will work for files above 4GB but the 360 can't read it.
The 360's compatible with any external USB drive. Use MacDrive 7 to format it to HFS+ if you plan to use WMV-HD.

The ipod shuffle plugs great into it, if you need to use it for smaller items
