My xbox 360 has just started crashing after 18 months of using it with no cooler/fan. If i bought a cooler/fan would it cure the problem? & also which cooler/fan do you recommend?
thanks

None really.
Once your 360 starts to lock up and crash I'd say it's inevitble that it's going to get 3ROD.
If it were me I would beat it to the punch and replace the X-Clamps.
The clamps are at fault. I've seen systems with intercoolers and my own personal system has Talismoon fans. They all die regardless.
My launch day console got 3ROD on 23rd as I was playing. I replaced the X-clamps and was up and running again in a little over 20 mins. I have replaced the clamps an quite a lot of systems now so I pretty much know what I'm at and that helped. My first one took about 2 and a half hours.
Tha b@stard of it is since I fixed it I've put in about 25 hours (some marathon time off work christmas sessions) and now my laser is acting up.... It never rains it pours. I've tweaked the pots and thats helped but I know it needs a new laser.
Don't mean to bore you with my woes... but it goes to show a lot of things are easilly (and mostly cheaply) fixable.
Replacing X-clamps will work out cheaper than a new set of fans and is a better long term solution.
Finally (this is getting to the REALLY boring bits now), if you decide to replace the clamps, don't go with all the mini packs of bolts that are listed on tutorials. These are an expensive way to go. Get the packs of bolts and washers from Maplin. These come in sizes that are enough to repair a couple of consoles and cost about £3 a pack. Arctic silver (optional) will cost about £6 off ebay. The Asaka HQ compound sold at maplin is also very good and will work just as well.
Or alternatively, let it die and send it back to microsoft under the extended warranty you'll get it replaced..... eventually.

You get 3 years warranty now, why not just ring M$ and get it repaired / replaced free?

only if it actually develops 3 red lights, otherwise it's still 1 year. also you end up without a 360 for 2-4 weeks and if it's modded there's a chance they won't fix it at all.

Someone suggested to my to put the powerbrick at the same level as the console and believe or not it actually worked for a bit but now my 360 is crashing again. How long does it usually take before the 3ROD happens?
Also is there anyone out there that would be willing to fix my console before i get the 3ROD and if so how much?

yeah that would be great if you could send me the web addy crossa thx m8ty
Just keep playing it - it will develop 3 reds within a week.
I believe you can even say its showing 3 reds on the phone....doesnt mean it will be when they get it - If they test it, it will crash and we all know they are the symptoms.
