Just seen these 8x disks in SVP
http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/new8xRidisc.gif
Seems like a pretty good deal at £15.98, its a drop of nearly £10.
Although I suppose it could mean there have been problems with those :suspic:

Should be OK, well going by the quality of the 4X G04 Ridata's and that they are a direct Ritek brand too.
Great price! :)

Not bad but is it worth paying that much extra to save 7-8 minutes?

For me yes as it still takes me 30 mins to burn a disk :D

What???? If you are using 2x media then I can understand but 4x media should only take 15-16 minutes to burn to disc.
I-wanna-be-unfamous!

I'll second that

Yip it takes that long for me, unless I am doing something wrong. Using the Ritek RiDisc 4x and burning them in CloneDVD at the 4x still takes me 30mins.
By the way I have not installed any firmware yet.

Sounds like you haven't enabled dma mode on your comp? if it's already enabled then you need to change your burning prog.. i use the ridisc 4x and it only takes 15mins to burn a full dvd at 4x in recordnow max.

How do you enable it mate?

is your computer fast enough to burn at that speed? i got a mate running p3 800mhz, 128mb ram, with a tosh -r burner and he can't burn faster than 2x- not sure if he's enabled dma either.
If you can't burn 4x's at 4x, then i doubt you're gonna get 8x's burning at 8x let alone 4x
to enable dma, go to device manager, select the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller, right click the primary (and then secondary) IDE channel-right click properties- select the adavnced settings tab, and click the transfer mode drop down menu and select "dma if available"

Yup, something is clearly amiss if it is taking you longer than 16 minutes to burn 4x media. Even my old 1.1GHZ Celeron with 128MB SDRAM could handle burning at 4x. Somehow you are not burning faster than 2x. Good thing we got this straightened out for ya before you went out and spent a whole bunch of money on 8x media.

Very true Jesterrace
It says DMA if available, so is there anything I can do to get it to the proper speed or is it f00ked?
PC is a P4 2GHz, 256MB Ram, 128MB Graphics card, 80GB HD

 Your PC's specs are virtually identical to mine. Have you made sure that the DMA is available? Also what burner and firmware are you using?

Pioneer 107 (according to CloneCD this is the full title of my drive :D Pioneer DVD RW DVR-107D 1.05)
No firmware installed as I cant answers for the questions I have, like can firmware be removed, does it increase the risk of the writer burning out, does it increase the risk of coasters etc etc

I would just re-flash it with the upgraded firmware. Then you can burn your 4x Riteks at 8x. :D

Yep but what does it say for Current Transfer Mode, Ultra DMA Mode 2 or PIO?

I think (if I remember correctly) it was Ultra DMA Mode.
Is there any real difference?
