It sounds like he not create a user acount at the OOBE screen.
This would have given him an account which would most likely be set to auto login with the option to password protect later.

It is always a poor choice to run Windows XP, or any Operating System, from the "Administrator" or "Root" account.

If he cannot access the desktop then his choices are limited.

In my opinion, the best option would be the most popular option which has been exploited by IT Professional for years. And it's free.

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor (http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/) will allow him to reset or blank the password without knowledge of the previous password.

Of course the boot disk will have to be built in a Windows environment, meaning a functional PC is required.

For avoidance of this issue in the future, he should disable the "On resume, password protect" option on the screensaver tab.

This is one of my first tweaks on a fresh Windows installation, along with disabling screensaver. No need hogging up system resources while the computer is idle.
My personal preference is to exploit the "Turn Off Monitor" in Power Options instead.

just a chance, but if he definatley didn't set up user/pass, just try hitting ENTER and if that works just go to user accounts and change the way computer starts up, 'show welcome screen' instead of asking for user/pass which isn't there. had the same problem a month ago. hope yours is easy fix as mine was.
