:hdspin: Hi , I've got a 80gb hard drive inside the xbox, can you get a program to defragment the E.g f: partition only, or would you have to defragment the whole drive ?, Is it easy to do ?

Thanxs

no defragmentor at the moment and doubtful in the near future- format and reinstall everything if you really need to-

avalaunch claim to be working on somehting but- their orginal method was shelved as it was just too much work (i didn't realise how much work it did involve- there's a thread about it at the avalaunch forum in x-s explaing why the original version got shelved and maybe the current progress)

doubtful it will make into ava 1.0 though which could be out soon(ish)- they're completely rewriting the code (sort of like how team xbmp restarted with xbmc) so that explains the reasonably long (for avalaunch) time since the last update.

There's not that much point in defragging an Xbox HDD.

...If u think about it.

...X, Y and Z partitions are used for the swap file. All three partitions are wiped on power down.

The other reason that u don't need to worry about defragging, even if u run your games off the HDD, is data access times.

The Xbox was designed to stream data from the DVD drive to memory and/or cache (the swap file).

...The data stored on the very outer periphery of a DVD disc (the Fastest section) is never gonna match the speed of a HDD, fragged or defragged, theres just no comparison, or indeed any need to worry.

they dont get wiped on power down, the halo map editor proves this, they symply get overwritten when a new game needs the cache space.

...I was talking in general terms, for example the principle of x,y and z is MEANT to be used for cache, not non-volatile storage.

...U may well use them for Halo editing, the point is the Xbox wants to and can delete the data on these partitions as needs warrant.

...It all comes back to not worrying about defragging the xbox, as the xbox doesn't suffer from problems because of fragged data.

Thanks M8's for all the replies, Its not showing any symptoms of slow start up or loading problems yet, it was more of a clean up op, to keep things running smoothly.
