interested in this myself, also interested to see if you can simply burn a mpg to dvd-r?
i use tmpeg encoder and tmpeg author http://www.tmpgenc.net/ you will need both programs. go to http://www.dvd-guides.com/guides.php?category=othertodvd&name=tmpegenc for a step by step guide on how to use.

I just read the step by step guide and well it was going good till on it it said it will take about 3-5 hours um... is there a faster way?
it does take around 2-4 hrs for a 700-800MB .avi to be converted to mpeg dependen on specs and output settings, i use tmpgenc as well BTW
guy0 - I agree it does take around 2 - 3 hrs to convert avi to mpeg using tmpeg encoder, usng tmpeg author after you have successfuly encoded is much less intensive, usually for me around 15 - 20 mins. I have yet to find a faster prog. I did find however an improvement on speed with tmpeg encoder was achieved when I upgraded my graphics card.

Might want to look into mainconcept encoder. Fast and good quality, as well as super easy to use.

I just got done using tmpgenc and well I did exactly what that guide tol me to do but my mpg has no sound and halfway threw the movie it goes black and it is very choppy. um is there something better?

The best i'd say is neoDVD its not free but a 15 day trial is available which if fully functional, The only downside is its 75mb although not a problem if your using broadband.
i must seriously have bad luck at this.
I installed the neoDVD in a new folder on desktop then i restarted my comp after everything loaded I doublicked the icon and a warnign keeps popping up saying only one neodvd modules can be opened at one time. I tried that and both of them in the folder.
um........help?

Well assuming you mean MPEG2, there are basically two free encoders; bbMPEG and ffmpeg's libavcodec in the form of ffmpeg, mencoder, QuEnc, ffdshow, etc.
On the non free front, CCE is also quick and gives good quality. Oh yeah and TMPGEnc is free for MPEG1.
Oh yeah if you want you can use ffMPEG to directly convert the audio from an AVI to AC3. Quality is not great, but it is quick and free.
bbMPEG ffMPEG? never heard of such things. May you point my to a good site about one?

bbMPEG is quite old, slow and the quality is not great. Think about the only thing it is used for these days is multiplexing files with DVD2SVCD. I still use the demuxer though.
ffmpeg = http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/
For AC3 encoding with ffmpeg it is probably easiest just to head over to dvdrhelp and download the GUI. If you want the latest version though you will find CVS instructions on the above link although I did do a compile myself yesterday.

-guy0Why did you install a program on your desktop???
PS. Just to add, you must also have directX 9 installed to use neoDVD.
i put it on my desktop for the hell of it,cause well easier acces at the moment and to delete it with ease, and it was quickly deleted. and yes i got directx9.

Ok, well works fine for me, although the error you got does happen if you don't do a system re-start before using.
i did restart, multiple times.

Yep but you installed it on your desktop, the proggy automatically creates a desktop icon buy default so when you try to open it, it opens twice and gives you an error, Anyhow out of curiousity i installed the demo on my spare pc (on the desktop) like yourself and get the same probs as yourself, I also uninstalled it and then reinstalled in the programs folder and it worked fine, so unless its just a coincidence its installing it on your desktop thats causing the problem.
hmm... interesting......thanks many i go try again.

Canpous procoder does the best job!
DiVx to MPEG2
ok neo dvd made a VIDEO_TS folder so I put in in a folder blah and made an AUDIO_TS folder cause I remember reading that some dvd players have trouble if this isnt there. then I made an iso with dvd shrink then burnt with dvd decrypter , the result was choppy picture and very very very low sound.
This Canpous procoder, DiVx to MPEG 2 , were might I stumble upon these items?

Think Scandy just meant that Canopus procoder was good for converting DivX AVI's to DVD compliant MPEG2.
thats all i need. Something that doesnt make the image pixelized more and that plays sound!
