Well as far as the Power DVD not playing your region my best advice is uninstall then re install. But as for the reason your back ups play if you used Dvd Shrink it makes the back up region free ( All Regions).

Devil-Man chances are I'm guessing that maybe one of the first dvd's you tried was a non r1-disc and powerdvd has locked the code to this?

there's a prog (shareware) called Powerdvd tweaker (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3873.html) which will let you mess with the settings in powerdvd.

Personally I would just install anydvd (http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html)- I don't think just doing an install/reinstall will work- as i've done that a few times and it never gives me an indication that the region has been set every time i put a retail dvd in for the the first time after re-install- although this could be something that's left in the registry- and probably can be removed if you not what you're doing

i don't have any dvd's that are other regions aside from 1. all my copies i've done myself using dvd decrypter-> dvd2avi -> nero. they all play like a champ.
i tried that anydvd and whatever won't work in powerdvd, anydvd gives me a read error like it has trouble reading the disc. weird stuff man lol. i'll give that powerdvd tweaker a try and see what it does. the region on my drive isn't even locked in yet either if that's worth anything. i tried changing it to 2 and rebooted and went back to 1 and rebooted and that didn't solve anything. keep ideas coming guys, i appreciate it.

You could try DVD Region Killer, or DVD Genie. I'm currently using DVD Region Killer on my Pioneer 107 for multiregion discs.
