Try not to have a DVD-ROM or CDROM on the same IDE channel with the HD. In your case, I would buy an external USB/Firewire enclosure for the DVD-ROM or the burner.

memories (http://66.197.142.137/forums/member.php?u=291) ,I was going to put my cdrw on the same IDE channel as my hdd but was advised not to because apparently it will slow the hdd down to the slower speed of the optical drive.

Or just buy a PCI IDE Card.

There is no problem with this IDE setup.
For some years now, IDE controllers have supported Independent Device Timing, which allows each device to run at its own interface speed. The only restriction is that both devices on the IDE channel need to support a DMA transfer mode -- basically ATA-33 or faster.

There is a limitation with IDE where only one device per channel can be actively transferring data at a time. Access to one drive would be slowed when trying to simultaneously access the other drive on the same IDE channel.

BlackDiamond has some interesting points.

I suggest you folks read This Page (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/conf_Performance.htm) for more info.
