epson dx5000 problem

my bro in law has got one of these printers, and he's tried to install compatable ink, but its not recognising it, he took it back to dixons and they told him that ALL new epson printers will not accept compatable ink you have to buy legit ones. does anyone know if this is true or a way round it.

Same on the R265's, ones made after a certain date didnt recognise compats. There are some new ones on the market that now work

so is his only option to buy the legit ones?
he managed to buy compats but they didnt work (why sell them if they dont work?) think epson shot themselves in the foot bringing that model out, i'll tell him to bin it and get a R220.
