I've just bought a 160Gb hdd. I have a 40Gb already installed. How do I transfer all my stuff from the 40 to the 160 so I can put in another 160?:hdspin:

get a copy of powerquest drive image or norton ghost, as that is the easiest way, or you can manually tranfer your files over, cut and paste, and then reinstall windows.

Before you consider the method of transferring your files though, there are some other considerations.
Drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary) arenot recognized in Windows XP, unless SP1 is installed.
Also the system must have a 48-bit LBA-compatible BIOS.
If the above conditions are not met, XP will only see the drive as a 137GB

If he was having problems with the drive size being recognized, wouldn't he have posted that as well?

Maybe, but we dont know if he has installed it yet do we ? or what OS he is using.
The way I read the post was .... he has just bought the drive and is seeking help.
Perhaps we should wait for him to respond eh ?

I'd install the service pack either way, but thats me. Anyway, you should have either 152, as PhilEnfield (http://www.dvdrom-guide.com/forums/member.php?u=97) said, if the drive is installed properly or 137 if you don't have SP1 installed. 147 is an odd number.

 Easy, Just done it myself, transferred all my files and XP operating system over form a 60gb to a Samsung 120gb 8mb cache, don't worry about service packs etc, Get a copy of Acronis migrate Easy Deluxe from www.greatbridge.co.uk (http://www.greatbridge.co.uk) for £6.47 Delivered or www.amazon.co.uk (http://www.amazon.co.uk) for under a £10, Install the software and it will tell you to make a bootable floppy disc, Reboot and follow the instructions you can add partitions as well. Simple, complete job takes around 30 - 40 including opening the machine up and swapping the hard drives from slave to master vice versa.
TIP : Get the files transferred over and the new hard drive set to master before formatting the old hard drive, incase something goes wrong, If your using a PCI 133 Ultra ata Controller card or something similar, disconnect the hard drives from the card and connect them directly to the motherboard IDE Cables.

The reason you had no problems m8 was because your drive was 120gb.
Drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary) are not recognized in Windows XP, unless SP1 is installed.
Also the system must have a 48-bit LBA-compatible BIOS, so what you are suggesting wont work for crabbie, I'm afraid, without SP1.
