Give FlashGet (http://www.flashget.com/en/download.htm) a try. It's a freeware.

I noticed your ISP is Blueyonder (Virgin).

If you are downloading a lot between 4.00pm and midnight, you may be experiencing their "Traffic Management" speed restriction.
Depending on the price of your package, the more or less you can download during this period.

Then the torrent speeds were not fine as you said. They've got to be affected as well.

I am having the same problem. I have got a 20mb connection but only getting speeds of 5 to 70 kbps on the ftp I connect to. I am currently in contact by email with their support team because the traffic shaping should take my speeds down to 5mb. I have read they can restrict speeds on certain ports that you use like ftps and torrents. If I download files from websites during these periods I get speeds of between 500 to 700 kbps. Virgin are really peeing me off at the moment, I had a brilliant service when they were Blueyonder and telewest but now it is total shite. Their support line is 25p per minute which is another p*ss take.

I have a 20mb Virgin (Blueyonder) connection and always get poor results with FTP.
Newsgroups on the other hand are excellent. I manage to get an average of 2300kbps and never any dropouts.

Newsgroups are very easy these days, with Grabit (freeware) and Newsleecher, it's all very simple/straight forward.
A Hitnews subscription is around £5 a month for unlimited downlaods, so is much cheaper too.

If you havent tried them, hitnews.eu offer a 3 day free trial ... give it a whirl and see for yourself.
