I have a friend on Virgin media thats just had it installed but he only got a modem with a single ethernet connection. He wants to connect his XBox and pc to this but he has not got the money till next month to buy a switcher or cable router.

I have a spare ADSL router that works fine. Will the virgin modem asign different IP addresses if i use the router as a switcher?

(I know the router wont run the internet connection as it is ADSL and not cable but i have tryed it in my home and it acts as a switcher with another router doing the internet)

Cheers for the help.

Can't see it working tbh - as per you last sentence it works in your house because you are using the switch with another router that is performing the NAT translation etc. The modem, albeit ethernet, won't be able to do that.

you can get ADSL routers that can be used just as a router (turn something off in the settings). depends on the make & model I suppose

mmace is correct...
Some routers have a switch to turn them into cable routers.. its only turning the modem part off.
