brightening up a film with dark spots how?plz

hi how do u go about brightening up a film which has some dark spots in it plz before converting to dvdfiles
what programs etc will i need looking to brighten up this film once downloaded (live free or die hard xvid pukka)

Premiere Pro has something called "shadow & highlight" which lightens the dark spots but leaves the brighter bits alone

ok got abode cs3 but comes up min pc requirements
support for cpu extension SSE2?plz upgrade or adjust system to meet requirements so wont load can someone tell me how i get round this without having to upgrade anything
my cpu is athlon xp 2400 would ov fought powerful enough
