I've got a Sony Vaio RXG-08 which has Gigapocket PVR software built in to rip stuff down to DVD. The only thing is that its crap - loses a lot of quality in encoding.
Can anyone recommend any other software that will record stuff from the SVideo/phono input to the HD in DVDR burnable format (mpeg) without losing the quality.

I assume you have it set to the highest quality. Otherwise adjust your bitrate accordingly.
I have tried WinDVR and came right back to the ATI MMC 9 for my 9800 AIW card. Just didn't have the quality level. So I would rule that one out.
Tried the Snapstream Beyond TV software, and wasn't happy there either. Nice interface, but still lacked the quality.
I'm sure someone can chime in with something you can use though.
Hope that helps.
