mkv files to avi ?

how do i convert mkv files to avi? i can watch the files thru media player but i want to get them onto dvd. from reading up it seems its a 2 part process, 1st get them to avi files, then i can get them to dvd with svcd2dvd. just the 1st bit i'm stuck on.
