Simply not worth it at present.

Verbatim (Mitsubishi-manufactured) 4x DVD-R media is available for 85p a piece at present. This media is of a far higher standard than this 8x Ritek media at the same or slightly higher price -- and drives like the NEC 2500A will write it at 8x with stock firmware (and the 107 will also do the same job with hacked firmware -- and I don't think it's 100% reliable yet with stock firmware on the 8x Ritek media).

The Ritek media is totally unproven, and has given some marginal results on some writers already according to contacts. The MCC media on the other hand is a proven performer at 8x.

In short, if you want 8x DVD-R media at present, 4x MCC is your disc, not Ritek. Take advantage of the fact you can get real Japanese media cheap at the moment :)

Regards your writer, that's up to you. The 106 is an excellent burner. If you could do with the extra speed, go for it. If not, don't bother. There is no way to hack your 106 for 8x writing btw.

www.xsct.co.uk (http://www.xsct.co.uk) have had them for ages btw.

ALl this talk of 16X burners does make me laugh right now when even 8X media is still not widely available right now. Now what came first, the chicken or the egg?

Moving to media forum for you ..........

it is getting silly now 15 minutes for 4x so roughly 7.5 for 8x, 4 minutes for 16x, each time the price probably doubles- unless you are making a business out of it- i really don't see the point - ok the time diff between 1x - 4x was significant but I for one won't be rushing out to by 8x drives and media (till my 105 packs up at least :() even then i probably get the a 107 but stick to 4x media

I can't see the point in buying 8 speed -r's for £22 for a pack of 25, when you can burn the datasafe ritek Go4's 4 speed +r's just under £15 a pack of 25 at 8 speed without any problems, i use a liteon 1s81 8 speed writer and they will burn problem free

8x +Rs are cheaper than 8x -Rs at present, I wonder if this will prove to be a trend now (it is more difficult to make 8x and higher -R than +R due to +Rs superior calibration system).

As said by many though, there are plenty of other options open; using 4x Verbs, 4x Ritek +Rs, also using 4x Ritek -Rs -- or Prodisc S03 -- which both burn OK at at least 6x if not 8x -- and 6x is only a minute or so slower than 8x.

These 8x Ritek -Rs need to come down in price, and quickly, or another manufacturer will produce decent 8x media at a lower price and clear up. There's no fundamental reason why 8x media can't be 60p or less. Of course, when cheapass 8x media becomes the norm, that'll be good for everyone because crap 8x will almost certainly work 100% OK at 2x if not even 4x.
