Hi folks, I am home for a few days and trying to fix the inumerable pc problems my (technically inept) parents get on a seemingly daily basis.

About 3 months ago, they changed ISPs from an ISP called SAPO to one called CLIX (in Portugal). My dad's main email address is one he has had for a number of years from a server called TELEPAC. I.e. his email is XXXXXXX@mail.telepac.pt

Since they moved over to CLIX, Outlook Express works fine with his other email addresses (fastmail and hotmail), and sends emails fine for his telepac account.

However, the send/receive fails at the 'check for new mail' stage, meaning the only way he can read his new emails is by logging into their webmail.

The error he gets is:
'The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Shyam', Server: 'pop.telepac.pt', Protocol: POP3, Port: 38444, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E'

I have looked at his (POP3) email settings and they are:
Incoming mail (POP) - pop.telepac.pt
Outgoing mail (SMTP) - SMTP.telepac.pt

Account Name - XXXXXXXX@mail.telepac.pt
Password - XXXXXXXX
(These are correct)

'Log on using secure password authentication' is unchecked

The outgoing mail server has the 'My server requires authentication' checked, and the settings is set to 'same settings as incoming mail server' radio button selected.

Based on the fact that there are no problems sending email, I can only assume that pop.telepac.pt needs to be changed to something else - I have tried pop.clix.pt without success.

Unfortunately, CLIX.pt technical support are no use at all - one person I spoke to stated that clix would not permit use of other email accounts - which must surely be rubbish, but I am getting no where with this.

Does anyone have any ideas? My dad has used this email for at least 5 years, so does not want to get a new email.

Thanks everyone.

Have you tried pop3.telepac.pt ?

If all else fails, try deleting the account in Outlook Express and setting it up again ..... this sometimes clears any glitches.

I've no idea what's causing the problem but on this Telepac page (http://www.telepac.pt/faq.html?id=580926) there appears to be an automatic configuration for Outlook Express, Having said that I don't speak the language so it could really be anything , may be worth a try though.

Also in the authentication settings have you tried entering the details manually instead of ticking the radio button, I know it shouldn't make any difference but still it's worth a try.

edit:
A long shot but it may also be worth checking to see if Telepac webmail supports mail forwarding.

try using lower case in the outgoing mail box ie smtp.telepac.pt instead of SMTP.telepac.pt, worth a try?

maybe a specific setting for this ISP but is there any reaosn that they are using Port: 38444 rather than 110, which is normal for pop3.

You SIR, are a genius.

I have just spent half an hour on the phone arguing with telepac who (understandably) state that since my dad is no longer a telepac paying customer, they basically didn't want to know - they gave me the pop.telepac.pt setting.

Clix customer services claimed that there was a block on the telepac servers as it is a different ISP - and basically said that he would have to use his CLIX email - which as I pointed out was not reasonable - he has had the same email for the last 5 years, and the last thing he wants to do is to change it now. They said fair enough, but he would have to limit himself to using the webmail access.

And you, giving me those 3 sweet number 110, solved the problem straight off.

My dad says thank you very much.
