ipod troubles

hi guys im needing help ive got an ipod nano and and a 30 gb video ihave all the software and itunes installed . ive been tryin for the last three hours to get music on to either but no joy im ready to scream what am i doin wrong can someone give me a idiots guide please!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ive been on apple site and done the tutorial but still no joy :confused: :alert: :alert: :alert:

what happens?
does your PC/Mac recognise the iPod?
do you see the iPod settings within iTunes once the iPod is plugged in?
what settings are you using?

Give a bit more detail .... i.e. PC or Mac, system specs, OS etc. USB1 or 2 ?

using pc -windows xp - usb1
yep pc recognises ipods and ipods there when itunes starts up and its configed for automatic updates in libary
when ipods are connected to pc itunes says update successful but when i eject ipod and check there are no songs on it
